前言

“一起打保龄”这个题目来自一本由罗伯特·帕特南撰写的政治学名著《独自打保龄》。它是一本关于社区生活衰落的研究，即20世纪70年代末以来新自由主义下出现的一种个人主义的激化和泛滥。而”独自打保龄”则是对于这一现象的隐喻。

本次展览围绕“边界”和“共生”这两个概念展开，它回应了今天艺术实践的范式转换，即从个体艺术家的天才神话到创意工作者的团队协作。所以我们引用并翻转了“独自打保龄”这一文本，并希望通过五位年轻艺术家的团队工作来探讨，艺术家的个体“边界”如何被识别或超越，如何在“共生”中找到个体和群体之间的平衡。

我们将整个展览项目分为两个部分。在广州美术学院大学城美术馆2020年11月28日开始为期一个月的第一场中，我们展现了五位艺术家个体的创作，他们是如此迥异和各有特色，就如同独自打保龄的人。而在2021年的第二场展览中，他们将被要求在团队协作中针对一个特殊的场所创作一批在地性艺术作品。

“未来社”——曾经创办于1981年的广州珠江水利委员会子弟学校（珠委小学）是他们共同聚焦的地点。它坐落广州市天河区天寿路旁，占地面积1700多平方米。这里今天被改造成了一个社区文化中心，五位艺术家将通过几个月的调研在此共同创作。这也是另一种对于边界的讨论——艺术如何进入公共空间，如何对话一个有历史温度的场所。

同一个场所聚集了不同的个体，使得他们进入协作，实现某种所谓时间和空间的感性共振。作为策展人我不禁要问，一群“独自打保龄”的人如何可以走到一起？整个项目本身将是一种关于创造力的社会政治实验，它能够向我们展现今天“边界”和“共生”、个体和群体之间的博弈过程。

The title "Bowling Together"comes from the famous political science book Bowling Alone: The Collapse andRevival of American Community by Robert Putnam. It is a study on the decline ofcommunity life, namely, the intensification and spread of individualism underthe new liberalism since the late 1970s. "Bowling Alone" is ametaphor for this phenomenon.

This exhibition focuses on two concepts of "boundary" and "symbiosis". It responds to the paradigmshift of today's art practice, that is, from the myth of genius individual artists to the teamwork of creative workers. Therefore, we have quoted and flipped the text of Bowling Alone and hope to explore, through the teamwork of five young artists, how the individual "boundary" of artists is identified and surpassed, and how the balance between individuals and groups in"symbiosis" is found.

We divide the whole exhibition into two parts. The first scene, which will last for a month, is going to be held on November 28, 2020, at the University Town Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. We will show the creation of five artists. They are so different; each has distinctive characteristics, just like the people bowling alone. In the second exhibition in 2021, they will be asked to create a batch of site-specific art works for a special place, through team work.

The "UHub" -- the children's School of Guangzhou Pearl River Water Conservancy Commission (Zhuwei primaryschool), which was founded in 1981, is their common focus. It is located beside Tianshou Road, Tianhe District, Guangzhou, covering an area of 1700 squaremeters. Today, it has been transformed into a communal cultural center, where five artists will work together through months of research. This is another discussion of boundaries – how does art enter into public space, and how do we talk to a place with historical temperature.

Different individuals gather in the same place, which enables them to cooperate, realizing the so-called perceptual resonance of time and space. As a curator, I can't help asking, how can a group of"bowling-alone" people get together? The whole project itself will bea kind of social and political experiment about creativity, which shows us thegame process between "boundary" and "symbiosis", between individuals and groups.
